Making It Happen at Home – Episode 1

Make it happenFact: Not being married negatively affects the state of my house.

I find being unattached affects the status of my home improvement projects in two ways.

1. The fact that there is someone coming home kind of gives me a kick in the pants to get stuff done. Clean up, pick up, make improvements.

There is no one coming home.

2. I am so much more motivated to do home improvements when someone else is doing it with me.

I’ve lived in this apartment for the last three years and it’s really only been over the past six months that I’ve started to feel like this is my home. (I briefly wrote about this in my post, Dwelling.)

Then, a recent post where I discussed my cleaning habits got me thinking that maybe what I need is motivation. Since no one is coming home to motivate me, dear readers, YOU have become my motivation. I plan to post two small home improvement projects that I would like to work on during the next week and then follow up with you next Wednesday to see if this kind of accountability works for me.

Truthfully, it could totally fail. We experiment and see.

Project 1: Paint the Chifferobe.

Ah, my pretty chifferobe.

Ready for the close-up?

In the early days when I moved here with a 2 year old there was a lot of drawing on the – everything. I’m hoping we’re finally past this stage.

I painted this chifferobe in the late 1990s – that was probably the last time it saw fresh paint. It’s time.

I have paint.

I have a brush.

I’m gonna do this.

Really.

Project 2: Cut Quilting Blocks

The other thing I want to accomplish this week is to start cutting quilting blocks from vintage bed sheets I got from Goodwill. I don’t need to make the whole quilt – I just want to start cutting out the blocks.

Vintage fab 2

These two small projects might not seem like much, but for a single mama of four children under the age of 13, who works & mothers full time, anything on top of feeding, cleaning, dishes, wash, grocery shopping, homework, pickups & dropoffs – plus the full time job is A LOT.

For example: It is presently 7:39 PM and I. Am. Brain. Dead. (and my back hurts)

I hope to come through for you beloved readers – I’ll let you know next week.

  1. So agree with EVERYTHING you’ve written. This should inspire me to paint my kitchen and get out some of my quilting projects to work on. I painted two bedroom doors and a bathroom door this winter just because they needed it. Good Luck!

  2. I must admit that sharing a house with my boyfriend does not mean that tasks like painting or hanging up pictures or even finishing curtains get done fast. It still takes years…
Good luck on the painting and quilt jobs!

    • Thanks! Not to let the cat out of the bag but there was a little somethin’ somthin’ happening here today – this blog accountability thing might be working for me. I do know I was better at this stuff during the years that I was married, but that’s a whole ‘nother story…
